Spring Lawn Care

Before starting your lawn, you should have your soil tested.
Bring us a dry soil sample for a complimentary pH test or for a complete soil test purchase a Penn State Soil test. If the pH is not in the proper range, plant functions such as seed germination and nutrient uptake can be hindered.

The pH scale ranges from 0 – 14. A value of 7.0 means you have a neutral soil. Value less than 7.0 indicates acidity while values greater than 7.0 indicate alkalinity. Most turf-grasses prefer a soil pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. If the soil is too acid, lime may be applied. Lime can be applied year round. The best time is in the Fall, with freezing and thawing of the soil; this helps to work the limestone into the soil. If the soil is above 7.5, you need to lower the pH by applying a product that contains sulfur.

Feeney’s Grass Seed
To ensure success, specially formulated grass seed for the Delaware Valley has been developed by Feeney’s and has a proven track record for beautiful results. Look for these great Feeney’s grass seed products: Best Mix, Special Mix and Shady Mix.

Crabgrass Control
Best control is with a pre-emergent product that prevents the grassy weed seeds from germinating. Apply Team on established lawns. Apply Tupersan on newly seeded lawns. Apply when the Forsythia blossoms start to fall. (End of March – beginning of April)

Fertilizing
Grass is a heavy feeder. Feeding the lawn 4 times a year is best (early spring, spring, late summer and fall). In spring a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen will help to green up the lawn, like Fortify Lawn Fertilizer (formula 29-3-4). If seeding, use Jonathan Green New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer (formula 14-28-15).

Broadleaf Weed Control (dandelion, chickweed, clover and plantains to name a few)
Best control is achieved when these weeds are actively growing. Apply to moist lawns early on a bright sunny day with temperatures 70 – 80 degrees.
• DO NOT apply when rain is expected within 24 hours.
• DO NOT use in extreme drought unless lawn has been
  deeply watered
• DO NOT use when temperature exceeds 85°
• DO NOT apply to newly seeded areas until they have been cut   at least three times
