Feeding Tips for Fall and Winter
As the warmth of the summer season wanes and autumnal
conditions begin to prevail, its time to once again
focus our attention on our feathered friends in the
garden.
Why it’s important to feed the birds in Fall and
Winter:
• It helps resident birds build a fat reserve
to be used for energy.
• It is vital when natural food sources become
depleted.
• It provides an easy food source for any migrating
birds flying through the area.
• Lastly, feeding the birds can provide hours
of entertainment for you during the long, cold days
of Winter.
In order to encourage birds at your feeder(s) this fall
and winter provide them with the following essentials:
• Quality seed mixes - don’t skimp on your
bird seed, inexpensive blends of seed typically contain
fillers such as: milo, oats, and wheat that birds won’t
eat.
• Clean feeders - wild bird should be cleaned
about every two weeks.
• Set up feeders where the birds will feel safe
and secure. Feeders should be set up near cover such
as hedges, evergreens or brush piles in order to provide
protection from both the harsh winter winds and predators.
• Be consistent in your bird feeding schedule
and keep them well stocked.
• Some birds prefer to feed on the ground. Keep
the seed at least 10' away from areas where predators
may lurk, and rotate the area periodically in order
to prevent disease.
• Finally - provide a source of clean, fresh water:
it can be as important to birds as food in the Winter.
In order to prevent the water from freezing, consider
using a bird bath heater.
