Decorating
tips for your tree,
mantle and your
stairway with garland
Decorate a beautiful
tree:
Did you ever wonder what it
takes to create a beautiful tree? Our experts provide
the answers.
• First you need to pick your theme colors, like
burgundy and gold, blue and sliver, etc.
• Lights: For each foot, you need one strand of
100 lights (7 strands for a 7 foot tree, etc.)
• Ribbon: 40 to 60 yards unless the tree is in
a corner. The treetop bow takes 10 yards. You can mix
two ribbons. Don’t try to decorate your tree with
just 10-20 yards. In our experience, most people do
not buy enough ribbon!
• Flowers and accents: Silk and dried flowers,
large items and garland go on next. Make sure some of
the flowers protrude from the tree, and some are tucked
in, so you have a sense of dimension.
• Plain Balls: Use 6-8 boxes of balls for a 7
1/2’ tree
(3-4 boxes of two coordinating colors is best).
• Ornaments: The ornaments for your theme go on
last.
Create a beautiful
mantle:
Did you ever wonder what
it takes to create a beautiful mantle? Follow our helpful
hints below.
• Start with the garland, and choose the right
thickness for your mantle. Permanent garlands come in
6 and 9 foot lengths and a variety of widths.
• Fluff out the garland before you do anything.
If you want lighted garland now is the time to add them.
Purchasing pre-lit garland saves both time and trouble.
• If you put a bow in the middle, make the bow
first. This will take about 4 yards of ribbon.
• Starting at one end, put additional ribbon on
the garland. Next you will need about 5 yards for a
9 foot garland.
• Add silk flowers or foliage, and glue in pinecones
or other natural materials.
• You can still display accents like candlesticks,
angels, or other decorative objects on the mantle.
Successful tips
for decorating a stairway with garland:
Artificial garland usually
comes in 9 foot lengths. Because of the swag in the
garland, each 9 foot length covers 6 feet of stair rail.
If you use ribbon, you will need about 5 yards of ribbon
for each 9 foot garland. Before you put the ribbon on,
fluff out the garland. You will also need 4 yards of
ribbon for each bow.
Add single and/or cluster
berries, pinecones, and other items to the garland.
Gluing in pinecones or natural materials like pomegranates
or dried flowers always makes the garland look more
realistic. The ribbon is the most important part of
the decoration, and you can even use two ribbons criss-crossing.
For example, a burgundy velvet crossed with sheer gold.
